Fish oils are one of the most widely taken food supplements and are widely recommended by nutritionists as well as medical doctors. There is a however confusion and questions when it comes to cod liver oil supplements. Are they the same as omega 3 oils? Which one should I take? I’ve taken cod liver oil as a child so is it best to stick to this? Cod liver oil helps my joints, so do I need to switch to omega 3 oils?
Cod Liver Oil VS. Omega-3 Oil: What’s The Difference?
Cod Liver Oil:
Cod liver oil is obtained from the livers of codfish. It is high in vitamins A and D. The levels of these vitamins can be toxic in high doses. In addition, the proportion of EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) to DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) is frequently lower than in omega-3 oil.
Omega-3 Oil:
Oily fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines are high in omega-3 oil extracted from their own tissues. The major portion is EPA and DHA the essential fatty acids that are essential for overall health.
Why omega-3 oil and not cod liver oil?
Purity and Concentration:
Omega-3 oil is generally purer and more concentrated in EPA and DHA compared to cod liver oil, making it a more efficient source of these essential fatty acids.
Reduced Risk of Vitamin Toxicity:
Omega-3 oil offers a lower risk of vitamin A and D toxicity compared to cod liver oil. This is because it lacks these fat-soluble vitamins, enabling consumers to have no major cumulative safety issues. Omega-3 fats contribute to the fastest accumulative benefits, to attain excellent health, most efficiently.
Heart Health and Inflammatory Effects:
Omega-3 oil has been proven to help heart health, lower triglyceride levels in the body, reduce inflammation, and remedy healthy blood pressure.
Brain and cognitive health:
These oils, which have high EPA and DHA levels, also help the brain and cognitive function. These molecules may also help stop further cognitive decline as part of a new preventive approach to age-related harm.
Mental well-being:
There have been links to improved mood and overall mental well-being, making them useful in supporting depression-based management and anxiety disorders.
Joint health:
Individuals suffering from joint pain or inflammatory conditions may find relief through the anti-inflammatory benefits of omega 3 oils.
The downside- possible risks of cod liver oil
In addition to additional Vitamin A and D, one can argue that it is also a disadvantage. Fat-soluble Vitamin A is toxic in high doses, and source already has a toxic close threshold. Surprisingly, if used heavily, Vitamin D can also be excessively toxic.
Pregnant and breastfeeding women should be particularly cautious with cod liver oil due to the vitamin A content. It's always best to consult your doctor before taking cod liver oil, especially if you have any pre-existing health conditions or take other medications.
Omega-3: A Safe and Potent Choice for Most
For most individuals seeking the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, omega-3 oil is the safer and more targeted option. It delivers a concentrated dose of EPA and DHA without the potential risks associated with high vitamin A and D content in cod liver oil.
In conclusion, while both cod liver oil and omega-3 oil contain both EPA and DHA, omega 3 oils are a superior source of these essential fatty acids. Cod liver oil does offer the added benefit of vitamins a and d, but also has a lower amount of EPA and DHA.
